About

Being the designated helpdesk and handyperson for the extended family is a unique role that comes with challenges and rewards. From fixing a leaky faucet to setting up the latest smart technology it involves a range of skills like patience, practical know-how, technical prowess, and the ability to explain complex concepts in simple understandable terms. It’s important to be approachable and empathetic to the frustrations that come with the ever-evolving nature of the stuff in our homes.

Despite the challenges, the role is gratifying. It fosters a sense of community and reliance within the family. There’s satisfaction that comes from being able to solve a wide array of problems, be it digital or physical. Sometimes the role may be unsung but it strengthens family bonds. Relatives appreciate the technical and practical support and the time spent together. It’s an opportunity to impart knowledge, perhaps teaching a basic home maintenance skills or showing how to use a new app to run the robotic vacum. The role of a help desk and handyperson is about more than fixing things. It’s about being a dependable presence and a source of knowledge in an increasingly digital and complex world.

I don’t charge family and friends for these services.  I learn a lot from others.  And sometimes I get paid with food or a beverage!

So it seemed a waste to keep all these lessons to myself. On this site I’m happy to share some of the challenges that might help you.

Just a heads-up: some of the links on my site are affiliate links that you don’t pay extra for but I do earn a commission.  Some even get you a discount.  It’s a great way to support the work I do here.  I’m really grateful for your support!
